PEI Crafts

J is a hard letter so today we talk about Just Crafts.

There is quite a variety of crafts on Prince Edward Island.  When you visit PEI and experience its scenery and culture, you will see that artisans have plenty of inspiration:  From art, to pottery, woodworking, to local crafts, there is plenty from which to choose.

I searched the government website for activities-crafts and found 53 results.  I cannot reproduce the search results in the link, but you can supply your own refinements. While I remember 10 years ago finding 50 craft and gift shops just in the Anne’s Land area, don’t be discouraged.  There are probably a lot more that 53 craft shops on the Island.  I know that several of these smaller shops cannot afford to advertise in several locations.    Here are a few of my personal favourites:

PEI Seaglass

Fire and Water Creations is a small studio where you can find hundreds of seaglass creations.  Terri has been collecting seaglass for many years and has many high quality items on display in her shop.

Dunes Studio and Gallery

The Dunes Studio Gallery and Café is a nice place to see a varied collection of art from Canada.  There are also lovely gardens and a dining area where you can enjoy some of the best PEI has to offer.

The Old General Store in Murray River has a wide variety of crafts, antiques, and furniture.  It is also located right next to two of my favourite summer stops:  The Magik Dragon where you can find all sorts of unusual artifacts from all over the world, and the best waffle cone ice cream in Eastern PEI.

PEI Preserve Company

The Prince Edward Island Preserve Company is an old creamery converted into a jam making shop and restaurant.  The gift shop always has samples of tea and preseves to tantalize your taste buds.  There is also a variety of local crafts .

Scrapbooking

Ah!  my passion.  There used to be several places to find scrapbooking products on Prince Edward Island.  Several references still exist on the web for places that are no longer in operation.  From what I can find, there are still 3 places.

scrapbook studio

Charlottetown features the Scrapbook Studio.  The is a new store that features a workshop room in the back where they regularly hold classes.

In Kensington, there is One Stop Crop.  Other than an address, I cannot locate any more information about in on the Internet.

Winsloe Scrapbooking Gift Shop

In Winsloe, you will find the Island Made Scrapbooking Gift Shop.  From the products page, I see that they have PEI-themed scrapbooking borders and tags. They also have licenced “Anne of Green Gables” scrapbooking embellishments; this means they have permission from the heirs to sell product labelled “Anne.”  There is also a collection of beach glass and beaded jewellery.  I was impressed with my visit to the Island Made when they were located just outside Hunter River.  This is the same shop now located in Winsloe on the outskirts of Charlottetown.

Which types of crafts interest you?  Will you be looking for anything special on your trip to PEI?

Tomorrow, the letter “K”

I see you have a nice different blog template. I think I’ve changed mine a few times and I’m still not really happy with it. I’ll keep tinkering when I have time and hope to finally come up with one. Yours is nice and fresh looking.

I’m glad you like the look of my blog. I did a lot of reading and a lot of research. It was a challenge to change the default template “connections reloaded” but I have it structured now the way I like it. It is difficult to get it “just right” without actually getting into the codes. I also hope you like the information I am gathering about Prince Edward Island and that you will consider visiting sometime.

Funny I don’t remember the general store, I’m taking notes.

I’ll be sure to visit some of these places.

Ah yes – two reasons not to notice the general store.
1-It is right next to the Magik Dragon which is much more visible.
2-The storefront just says Old General Store and you might dismiss the building
Definitely worth a look inside. They have a good variety of offerings.
